There is still time ⏳ to celebrate 🎉 #HispanicHeritageMonth by reading a great book 📖 about the Hispanic American experience. Check out 👀 this week's Fable recommendation ⏬ On September 9, 1921, a tropical depression stalled just north of San Antonio and within hours overwhelmed its winding network of creeks and rivers. Floodwaters ripped through the city’s Latino West Side neighborhoods, killing more than eighty people. Meanwhile a wall of water crashed into the central business district on the city’s North Side, wreaking considerable damage. The city’s response to this disaster shaped its environmental policies for the next fifty years, carving new channels of power. Decisions about which communities would be rehabilitated and how thoroughly were made in the political arena, where the Anglo elite largely ignored the interlocking problems on the impoverished West Side that flowed from poor drainage, bad housing, and inadequate sanitation.Instead the elite pushed for the $1.6 million construction of the Olmos Dam, whose creation depended on a skewed distribution of public benefits in one of America’s poorest big cities. The discriminatory consequences, channeled along ethnic and class lines, continually resurfaced until the mid-1970s, when Communities Organized for Public Services, a West Side grassroots organization, launched a successful protest that brought much-needed flood control to often inundated neighborhoods. This upheaval, along with COPS’s emergence as a power broker, disrupted Anglo domination of the political landscape to more accurately reflect the city’s diverse population."West Side Rising" is the first book focused squarely on San Antonio’s enduring relationship to floods, which have had severe consequences for its communities of color in particular. Examining environmental, social, and political histories, Char Miller demonstrates that disasters can expose systems of racism, injustice, and erasure and, over time, can impel activists to dismantle these inequities. He draws clear lines between the environmental injustices embedded in San Antonio’s long history and the emergence of grassroots organizations that combated the devastating impact floods could have on the West Side. Because of their race, income, or location — and often all three — the neighborhoods and communities of Tides Foundation Frontline Justice Fund grantee partners are the first to suffer the consequences of environmental degradation and climate change. Their crises of health and habitat are the bellwether for the debilitating effects to come if the environmental justice movement isn’t resourced at scale to meet the moment. Local communities have the solutions, but they need our support to win. Through legislative, legal, and regulatory action, and community education and organizing, they are pursuing safe spaces, clean air and water, a healthy place to call home and go to school, and an equitable future so all can thrive. In this inaugural grantee report, we offer an overview of the Frontline Justice Fund and highlight a number of grantee partner stories from diverse communities and cultures across the United States. We are proud to support these organizations and thank them for their courage, compassion, and conviction to protect, defend, and change the status quo. https://lnkd.in/gd286bCd#climatejustice #environmentaljustice

Hot off the press! 🔥 Our latest blog post considers the ever-present issue of power imbalances. Addressing these imbalances requires recognition of community rights over land and resources, then creating locally adapted governance systems to manage those resources sustainably. Reflecting on the Community Conservation Horizon Scan by Nafeesa Esmail and colleagues and the recent report from Maliasili on a related topic. https://lnkd.in/ePYBBV_G

For Latino conservation week, I discuss the lack of diversity in media networks like Nat Geo & Discovery channels growing up. First of all, I love that there is more diversity now. As an independent climate media host looking to produce, write, and host their own show, I've been met with many no's and questioning whether or not this is the right decision to continue pushing forward. With the recent SAG-AFTRA strikes happening in the entertainment industry, I've had to continue to remind people that labor justice and climate justice go hand-in-hand. As someone who works closely with small funders, organizations, and philanthropies to fund my small projects, I've been working on the time to decentralize our work from mainstream media networks that do not serve our self-interests is needed and to also push forward for an equitable policy that protects writers, directors, and actors.I've had imposter syndrome growing up my entire life and have come to terms with the fact that my work is not only for myself but for future brown creatives that are trying to break into the industry.https://lnkd.in/gFkgGD5r#latinoconservationweek #latinamerica #latinos #latinoleaders #sustainability #climatechange #climatejustice

This is the second in a series of four discussions that explore how racial equity continues to influence the transportation landscape and impact communities of color. This event is entitled, “Distrust of Transportation Policies and Solutions in Communities of Color”. The goal is to explore how historic disenfranchisem*nt has evolved to impact current transportation policy, the (re)definition on “community”, and how practitioners can be at the forefront of building trust with communities in the pursuit of transportation equity.

Last night I was watching video of Australia's sheep shearer and rural worker union. There was an interesting clip on introduction of differing technologies (a wider buzz comb). It provided me a lot to think about, and I will bet the underlying concept is a major one throughout history. For a long time in California unfair business laws kept our society in-check quite well, the advent of technology, akin to the comb problem, produced different outcomes as well. I also don't doubt our societies can find the coalescences between Au's Santos and US' Monsanto. Some concepts to consider, though: Australian sheep shearing looks fair cruelty. It's not, though. (Both sheep shearing and sporting kangaroo were youtube videos I Was able to view, but are no longer available. I am presuming the idealistic vegan- friendly bandwagon hopped on kicking that out of global observance). Usually, the shearer sustains more cruelty and permanent injury than the sheep (Broken bones and blunt force trauma including head trauma vs strained ligaments and knicks)...I have said before that head trauma begets head trauma. Between scar tissue&muscular pressure, capillary burst, and blood vessel constriction or expansion, and more, elevated biological distress from prior injury often can lead to expounding emotional expression. Anyway, relief is difficult to seek. I was referred to Alpha GPC, an acetylcholine, a food supplement, as viable intervention to the physical, biologic repercussions. I was also told turmeric, but received opposite relief. It is plausible, even if not likely, that producing one's own research could yield the individual specific results, but that might be another undiscovered wide tooth comb. ... wry
